Western Union in Argentina: is it still worth it for tourists?
What it costs to collect pesos, what to bring to the counter and how to plan your trip around cash, cards and local QR payments.
In this article
Yes, Western Union still has a place in an Argentina trip: getting pesos for purchases that need cash. It lets you send money to yourself and collect it locally. Whether to use it for more of your budget depends on the full transfer cost and how you can pay each merchant. Western Union's self-transfer guidance.
Start with the purchase:
- Cash only: compare Western Union's full quote with your other ways to get pesos, and check that you can collect them nearby.
- Card accepted: compare the final card charge with the full cost of paying cash for the same purchase. Use the card when it costs less and saves you a pickup trip.
- Local QR offered: a compatible wallet lets you pay the merchant directly. Check the code is supported and include funding costs in the comparison.
- Hotel stay: ask about the foreign-tourist VAT benefit before choosing cash. The payment method can change your final bill.
Tucu is being built for the QR option: a travel wallet for supported merchant payments in Argentina and Brazil. Pay from your wallet and keep cash for the places that need it. Tucu has not launched yet. Join the waiting list for early access.
What Western Union costs in Argentina
There is no single Western Union fee or exchange rate for every visitor. Your sending country, amount, funding method, payout method and any promotion affect the quote. Western Union's fee guidance.
We checked these public online estimates on 23 September 2026, selecting cash pickup in Argentine pesos. The US examples used debit-card funding. The UK calculator grouped credit and debit cards together.
| Transfer | Transfer fee | Total paid | Estimated pesos received |
|---|---|---|---|
| US: send US$100 | US$0, promotional | US$100 | ARS159,900.00 |
| US: send US$500 | US$0, promotional | US$500 | ARS799,500.00 |
| UK: send £100 | £7.00 | £107.00 | ARS212,407.01 |
| UK: send £500 | £17.50 | £517.50 | ARS1,062,035.07 |

The US quotes showed a 100% fee discount. Do not budget every later transfer at that promotional price. We did not verify returning-customer fees. The UK examples showed no fee discount in the session checked. Get a fresh quote for your own account before sending.
Compare the pesos against everything you pay
For the £100 example, the displayed exchange rate was about ARS2,124.07 per pound. Including the £7 fee gives an effective rate of ARS1,985.11 per pound paid: 212,407.01 pesos divided by £107.
Effective rate = pesos received ÷ total cost in your currency.
Here is how that helps at the checkout. In our 23 September example, £107 buys ARS212,407.01. If your card charges less than £107, including its fees, for a purchase at that same peso price, the card costs less. If the merchant offers different cash and card prices, compare the final cost of the same purchase under each method.
A zero transfer fee can still come with a margin in the exchange rate. Credit-card funding can also trigger cash-advance fees or interest from the card issuer. Check your card's treatment before choosing it. Western Union's US transfer information.
The size of each transfer matters. At the UK prices above, five £100 transfers would incur £35 in fees, and one £500 transfer would incur £17.50. That comparison assumes unchanged prices. Balance the fee saving against how much cash you need to collect, carry and spend.
Tucu's benefit starts with needing less cash for everyday spending. Scan a supported merchant QR, review the recipient, exchange rate, payment fees and total, then pay from your travel wallet. That is the experience we are building for purchases you would otherwise collect cash to make.
How to send money to yourself and collect it
- Choose a pickup location before sending. Use Western Union's Argentina agent finder to find a receiving location. Check its hours, accepted documents and whether it can handle your intended collection.
- Prepare your documents. The Argentine instructions ask for original government-issued ID and a photocopy. As a visitor, prepare your passport and a copy, and confirm acceptance with the chosen agent.
- Set up the self-transfer. Check that your sending account and payment method support it. Choose Argentina and cash pickup, enter your own full document name as the recipient, and review the payout currency and full quote before paying.
- Track, then collect. Use the 10-digit Money Transfer Control Number, or MTCN, in Western Union's transfer tracker. Once ready, bring your documents, MTCN, sender's name, sending country and expected amount. Review the collection receipt before signing.
The Argentina receiving instructions specify a tax identification number for Argentine citizens. They do not list it as a universal cash-pickup requirement for every visitor. Additional identity checks can still apply. Western Union's Argentine verification guidance.
Allow time for collection
The quotes displayed an in-minutes estimate. That excludes your journey to an agent and the time at the counter. Opening hours, cash availability and checks can affect collection. Western Union's availability terms.
Keep another way to pay while the transfer processes. If pickup fails, check another agent or contact Western Union before sending again. Find out what blocked collection before committing more money.
Can you receive Western Union money digitally?
Yes. Western Union advertises several receiving methods in Argentina. Their requirements differ, so choose the one you can use.
| Receiving method | What it provides | What a visitor needs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cash pickup | Pesos collected at an agent | Accepted ID, ready status, agent hours and available cash |
| Argentine bank account | A deposit into a local account | Local bank details, including a CBU account number and tax ID |
| Pago Fácil wallet | A balance for QR payments | Argentine-issued ID (DNI) and a labour or tax identification number (CUIL/CUIT) |
| Western Union Visa prepaid card | An ARS balance for Visa purchases | Issuance at a selected agent and the documents it requires |

Pago Fácil can receive Western Union transfers and pay merchant QRs. If you only have a foreign passport, do not assume you can open it. Our Mercado Pago guide explains the distinction between opening a local account and paying a merchant who uses it.
Tucu is designed for visitors who want to pay local QRs without opening an Argentine bank or Pago Fácil account. You will complete Tucu's own identity checks before paying. Eligibility, funding access and supported codes still apply.
Western Union's prepaid Visa requires no bank account, but we could not verify a complete passport-only application process. Confirm tourist eligibility, required documents and card availability with the issuing agent before relying on it.
Decide which purchases need cash
Keep cash for sellers you cannot pay electronically and as a fallback. For the rest, compare the merchant's price and the cost of paying it.
If you are considering an ATM instead of cash pickup, use the Argentina ATM fee calculator to count repeated operator fees, compare limits and account for expected rebates.
Where your foreign card works
Cards work at most restaurants, supermarkets and hotels, but the rate can be low. Purchases with foreign-issued cards are converted at a separate visitor rate. When we checked, the rate Argentina's card processors published and Visa's own rate were the same number. On 23 September, Visa converted at about 1,441 pesos per dollar and 1,919 per pound. The US quote above gave about 1,599 pesos per dollar, and the UK quote about 1,985 per pound once its £7 fee is included. Visa's FAQ still describes a rate slightly below MEP, but through September Visa's rate sat below even the official buying rate. Other networks and card providers can convert differently, so check what your own card charged. Our guide to blue dollar vs MEP shows how we checked it.
Use your card's actual conversion and issuer fees in the comparison above. The rate alone does not decide which method costs less.
Where the merchant offers a local QR
A café shows you a QR at the end of lunch. Your home banking app may not support it, and a phone camera alone cannot complete the payment. Check compatibility and prepare your wallet before you need it at the counter. Our Argentina QR payment guide explains how local codes work.
Ask which price applies to your payment method. Include wallet funding costs as well as the payment total.
Check the hotel's final price separately
Qualifying accommodation for foreign tourists can receive Argentina's VAT benefit when paid through the required route, including an eligible foreign-issued credit or debit card. The rules also cover qualifying transfers originating at foreign banks. Identification and accommodation requirements apply. Official accommodation VAT rules.
Collecting pesos through Western Union and paying the hotel in cash does not meet that payment requirement. Do not assume a local QR payment qualifies either. Ask the hotel for its final qualifying-card price and compare it with the final cash price before collecting money for the stay.
The arithmetic is easy to misread: removing 21% VAT from a tax-inclusive price of 121 leaves 100. That is a 17.36% reduction from the gross price. Check whether your booking quote already excludes the tax.
Frequently asked questions
Can tourists send money to themselves through Western Union?
Yes, Western Union documents self-transfers before or during travel. Availability depends on your sending country, account, payment method and identity checks.
Do I need an Argentine bank account for cash pickup?
No local bank account is listed in Western Union's cash-pickup instructions. You need the transfer details and accepted identification. Bank deposits are a separate receiving method.
Can I collect US dollars instead of pesos?
The quotes checked for this guide paid out in pesos. Sending US dollars does not mean you will receive dollar banknotes. Check the payout currency before paying.
Is Western Union always cheaper than a card?
Not always, but in our September checks it gave more pesos. On 23 September the US quote gave about 1,599 pesos per dollar and the UK quote about 1,985 per pound including its fee, while Visa converted card purchases at about 1,441 per dollar and 1,919 per pound. A promotional fee may not apply to later transfers, and collection takes time. Compare the full cost of the same purchase, including card charges and any difference in the merchant's cash and card prices.

Tucu: arrive ready for the QR at the counter
Lunch, shopping and the next stop on your trip should not have to revolve around collecting more cash.
We are building Tucu to put local QR payments in your travel wallet:
- Prepare before departure. Complete identity checks and arrange funding while you have time, before you reach a busy counter.
- Pay the merchant directly. Scan a supported QR and review the recipient, rate, payment fees and total before confirming.
- Continue into Brazil. Tucu is being built to support Argentina's local merchant QRs and Brazil's Pix, so the same wallet can serve both legs of your trip.
