In this article
Pix is cheaper when the complete cost of paying the Pix price is lower than the complete cost of paying by card. A merchant’s discount helps, but your exchange rate, card fees and wallet funding costs decide what you actually save.
The calculator above makes that decision practical. Enter the prices in reais, choose your currency and check the total Pix cost you need to beat. If you already have a quote for the payment, compare it directly.
And when the price works for you, you need a way to pay it. Tucu is built for visitors paying supported Pix QR codes in Brazil, with the exchange rate, payment fees and total shown before you confirm.
How this calculator works
Start with the card price in Brazilian reais (BRL). If the merchant advertises a percentage off for Pix, enter it in the discount mode. If you see two prices, choose Enter two prices. This avoids guessing which price a percentage applies to.
The first result is the merchant’s price difference in reais. It does not depend on an exchange-rate feed.
For a comparison in USD, EUR or GBP, the calculator converts the card price using a dated reference and adds the card fee you enter. The fee starts at 0%; check your issuer and change it if needed. For a closer estimate, open the card settings and enter your card’s conversion rate as reais per one unit of your currency. Mark it as including fees only if those charges are already inside that rate.
Without a Pix quote, the result shows a break-even cost: the maximum total Pix cost that would equal the estimated card cost. Below it, Pix costs less. Above it, the card costs less.
With a quote, enter the total for the Pix bill shown in the calculator, in the selected currency. Include conversion and payment fees. If funding fees are separate, add the portion belonging to this purchase. Changing the bill or currency clears the quote so an old amount cannot produce a new comparison.
The automatic conversion uses European Central Bank daily references. USD and GBP cross rates are calculated from its EUR rates. The ECB normally updates on working days around 16:00 CET. These are information-only references, not card-network rates or executable quotes. Your issuer’s settlement rate can differ. The tool shows the source date, stops using references more than five days old and lets you enter a rate if the feed is unavailable.
Prices use cents and conversion rates retain six decimal places. The discounted BRL price rounds to the nearest cent; the estimated card cost rounds up to a cent. Your provider’s rounding can differ. Calculations run in your browser; you do not need to enter account, card or passport details.
A real offer, and the percentage trap
When checked on 7 October 2026, Passeio Rio’s Angra dos Reis boat-tour page advertised an adult price of R$280 by cash or Pix, with 5% added for full payment by credit card.
That gives two prices:
| Payment | Merchant price |
|---|---|
| Cash or Pix | R$280.00 |
| Credit card, paid in full | R$294.00 |
| Difference | R$14.00 |
The Pix price is 4.76% below the card price, not 5%. The surcharge is calculated on R$280; the saving is compared with R$294. Use the calculator’s two-price mode for offers like this.
This is one advertised offer, not an average discount across Brazil. Cash gets the same price, and the offer can change. Confirm the current terms and accepted payment route before booking.
Brazilian law allows prices to vary by payment method or payment term and requires discounts to be visibly disclosed. That does not mean every merchant offers a Pix discount. Lei 13.455/2017.
When the discount survives the fees
Consider a worked example, using an illustrative rate of R$5 per US$1 and a card with no additional fee. These assumptions are not current rates or Tucu prices.
A R$500 card bill costs US$100 under those assumptions. A 5% Pix discount reduces the merchant’s price to R$475. The useful question is whether you can pay that R$475 for less than US$100 altogether.
| Complete quote for the R$475 Pix bill | Compared with the US$100 card cost |
|---|---|
| US$98, including funding and payment fees | Pix saves US$2 |
| US$100, including funding and payment fees | Equal cost |
| US$102, including funding and payment fees | Card saves US$2 |
The merchant’s discount is identical in all three cases. The total you pay changes the answer. If the same card adds a 3% foreign-purchase fee, its estimated cost becomes US$103 and the break-even Pix cost rises with it.
For a wallet funded in advance, count the funding fee once. If a US$2 fee funds several purchases, allocate that fee across them rather than adding US$2 to each payment. Include any tax already charged in the quote, and consider the cost of converting or withdrawing money left after the trip when comparing a whole holiday.
Check the card side of the comparison
Your card’s exchange rate and additional charges matter as much as the Pix price. Start with your issuer’s terms, particularly foreign-purchase fees. A card with no such fee can be a strong option where accepted.
If the terminal offers a choice between reais and your home currency, choose BRL as your default. The home-currency offer is dynamic currency conversion, using the merchant’s conversion terms. Visa says the screen should disclose the conversion rate and additional fees and allow you to accept or decline. Compare that offer if you wish, but do not mistake it for your card issuer’s usual conversion. Visa’s DCC guidance.
Also avoid adding a Brazilian resident’s overseas-card IOF rate to a visitor’s credit-card purchase in Brazil. The compiled decree sets zero IOF on incoming currency exchange covering domestic spending with credit cards issued abroad, in article 15-B(V). That specific rule does not establish the treatment of wallet funding, debit routes or cash withdrawals. Check those costs separately. Decreto 6.306.
The calculator compares purchase costs. It does not value rewards, interest, insurance or dispute rights. For an expensive advance booking, those can matter. See our Brazil payment guide for card disputes and Pix’s special refund mechanism, and check the merchant’s terms before paying.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pix always cheaper than a foreign card in Brazil?
No. Compare the total cost in the same currency. A merchant discount can make Pix cheaper, but conversion, funding and payment fees can use up that saving. A card with no foreign-purchase fee may cost less. Enter your own prices and quote in the calculator.
What is the Pix break-even cost?
It is the complete Pix cost that would equal the calculator’s estimated card cost. Pay less than that total to save with Pix. Include conversion, payment charges and the relevant funding fee.
Does a 5% card surcharge mean a 5% Pix discount?
No. If Pix costs R$280 and the card adds 5%, the card price is R$294. The R$14 difference is 4.76% of R$294. Enter the two actual prices to compare accurately.
Are the exchange rates live payment quotes?
No. The automatic estimates use dated ECB reference rates, normally updated on working days. Your card issuer’s rate and a Pix provider’s quote can differ. Enter those values when available and confirm the final cost before paying.
Should I add IOF to my foreign credit-card purchase?
The compiled decree sets zero IOF on the incoming exchange covering purchases in Brazil made with credit cards issued abroad. That is a specific route, not a blanket rule for every travel-money transaction. Wallet funding, withdrawals and other routes need their own checks.
Can I use Tucu to pay Pix as a visitor?
