How to buy bus tickets in Brazil: foreign cards, CPF and Pix
Book with your passport, get past payment problems, and know exactly what you need to board.
In this article
Yes, you can buy bus tickets in Brazil as a foreign tourist without a CPF, Brazil's taxpayer number. If you are booking from outside Brazil, Brasil by Bus documents international credit-card purchases without CPF. ClickBus's no-CPF route uses your passport as the passenger document and Apple Pay or Google Pay for payment. Brasil by Bus payment options, ClickBus's no-CPF instructions.
Already stuck at checkout? For a mandatory CPF field, use a seller's no-CPF option or another documented booking route. For a declined payment, check the existing order before trying again. If you have paid but have no ticket, check the booking status rather than paying twice.
This guide covers adult domestic intercity journeys. It takes you from choosing a checkout that accepts your passport to getting the correct boarding ticket and arriving at the right terminal.
Where to buy Brazilian bus tickets without CPF
Choose a seller whose checkout accepts your documents and payment method:
| Booking option | Document and payment route | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Brasil by Bus | Foreign passengers can use a passport. Its payment guide allows customers outside Brazil to use an international credit card without CPF. | Choose your country and use the foreigner options in the buyer form. Check the available methods for your departure. Passenger documents, payment rules. |
| ClickBus | Its no-CPF instructions specify a passenger passport plus Apple Pay or Google Pay. | You need the wallet button and an eligible card. Follow that passport-and-wallet route; check with ClickBus before relying on ordinary card or Pix payments without CPF. No-CPF instructions. |
| BuscaOnibus | Its own booking service documents international credit-card payments without CPF for customers outside Brazil. | The policy applies to bookings completed through BuscaOnibus. If a result redirects you to another seller, check that seller's requirements. Payment rules. |
Already in Brazil? Brasil by Bus and BuscaOnibus describe their no-CPF international-card route for customers outside Brazil. Confirm that the foreigner option is available in your checkout before relying on that route. Every payment still needs approval.
If online booking remains blocked, contact the bus operator or its official ticket office. Give the route and departure time, then ask whether you can buy with your passport, which payment methods it accepts, and when the counter is open. A counter visit is a fallback; seat availability still matters.
A CPF field is not the same as a boarding requirement
Checkouts can ask for two sets of details: the buyer, who places the order, and the passenger, who travels. Even when you are both, check each form. A passport option for the passenger does not automatically remove a CPF requirement for the buyer.
In the Brasil by Bus buyer form checked for this guide, the “I don't have CPF” option lets you omit that number. The form also offers an overseas phone option. Use your own details and the seller's foreigner route. If neither exists, choose another documented booking route rather than inventing a CPF.
For boarding on services covered by ANTT's interstate rules, a valid foreign passport is an accepted identification document. CPF is not your photo ID. See ANTT's boarding-document guidance and our CPF guide for tourists.
Check the journey and the full price before paying
Before you commit, check:
- Departure point: the terminal name and address, not just the city. A rodoviária is a bus terminal; a guichê is a ticket counter.
- Dates and times: departure in local time, arrival date, and whether an overnight journey arrives the next day.
- Operator and itinerary: who runs the bus, whether you change buses, and where any connection takes place.
- Seat and class: the selected seat and the amenities stated for that service. Check the operator's description rather than assuming every leito or semi-leito ticket includes the same features.
- Passenger details: your name and passport number, checked against the document you will bring.
- Final cost and conditions: fare, service or convenience fee, extras, cancellation terms and ticket-collection instructions.
Compare the complete checkout total for the same journey and class, rather than the first price in a search result. For a foreign-card purchase, your issuer's exchange rate and fees also affect what you ultimately spend. Our Pix versus card calculator can help compare payment costs using your own inputs.
What about Buser?
Buser allows foreign passengers to register with a passport, but offers both regular bus-ticket resale and charter trips. Check which you are buying and the trip's status: a charter journey marked A confirmar is awaiting confirmation. Check the buyer's CPF field and the payment and refund requirements too, even when the passenger form accepts a passport. Buser's passenger guidance, trip types, confirmation rules.
What to do if your foreign card is declined
First, check the existing order. A pending booking or card authorisation needs resolving before you risk paying for another seat.
If the seller confirms that the payment failed, verify your card details and ask your issuer whether it blocked the purchase. Then use another accepted method, following the seller's instructions for the failed order. ClickBus does not let you change the payment method after generating an order. It says to wait for that order to expire or be cancelled before making a new purchase, and that seats are released after 30 minutes. Its international-card payments also face stricter security checks. ClickBus payment and retry rules.
Apple Pay and Google Pay are card-payment routes here. They do not give you a Pix account. Pix may offer another way to pay when it is available for your order, but it cannot remove a mandatory buyer field or bring back an unavailable seat.
If departure is close, contact the seller or operator promptly. Allow time to establish a confirmed booking and collect a ticket if required, rather than relying on a last-minute payment going through.
Paying for a bus ticket with Pix
Pix is Brazil's local instant-payment system. A booking checkout may provide a payment QR or a complete copy-and-paste code, commonly labelled Pix Copia e Cola. Choose ordinary Pix for the steps below; Pix Parcelado is a separate credit product with its own approval and costs. You need a payment service that supports the code. Our Pix guide for tourists explains the options; ClickBus's payment guide distinguishes the two Pix products.
How to pay when the checkout is on the same phone
If the seller offers a copy-and-paste code:
- Copy the complete Pix code from the checkout.
- Open a payment app that supports paying it and paste it into the appropriate payment flow.
- Check the recipient details against the checkout, the amount in reais, and the exchange rate, fees and total shown by your payment service.
- Pay before the charge expires, check the payment result, then return to the booking site to check the order. If the payment is pending, establish its status before trying again.
A Pix payment code and a boarding QR serve different purposes. The first requests money; the second may identify your issued ticket.
Tucu is built for supported local QR payments in Brazil and Argentina. Scan a QR code or paste a supported payment code, then review the amount in reais, the exchange rate, payment fees and the total in dollars before you confirm. You can see how a local payment fits your travel budget. For a bus purchase, the booking seller confirms the order and issues the ticket. Join the waiting list for early access to Tucu.
Payment deadlines and ticket approval are separate
Pay attention to both the checkout timer and the seller's confirmation process:
| Seller | Published timing to keep in mind |
|---|---|
| Brasil by Bus | Its Pix purchase cutoff is one hour before departure. Its separate Pix-confirmation article says the confirmation email usually arrives within two hours. Follow the payment deadline displayed on your own charge. Payment cutoff, Pix confirmation. |
| ClickBus | Its payment guide gives a Pix payment window of 20 to 30 minutes and allows up to 60 minutes for security analysis after payment. Check the deadline displayed for your order. Payment timing. |
Paying within the deadline does not guarantee approval before departure. If the bus leaves soon, contact the seller before relying on Pix. Set up your payment service, complete any required identity checks and add money before starting a timed checkout.
Paid but no ticket? Check the order before paying again
Open the seller's order page and check your email, including spam. ClickBus says an order marked Confirmado or Completo is confirmed even if the email has not arrived; if you cannot find a paid order, contact support with your receipt. ClickBus's missing-confirmation instructions.
Keep the order number and payment receipt. If the published approval window has passed, or departure is approaching, ask the seller to confirm whether the order is approved, pending or cancelled. On ClickBus, a cancelled card order may leave a temporary card authorisation; a cancelled ordinary Pix order is refunded to the paying account within its published 24-hour window. A successful payment receipt alone is not your boarding ticket. ClickBus's cancelled-order guidance.
Get the right ticket and bring your passport
Read the boarding instructions attached to the confirmed order:
- Mobile ticket or Easy Boarding: download the actual ticket file with its boarding code for each passenger, and keep it available offline.
- Counter collection: take the reservation voucher and required identification to the operator's ticket counter to collect the boarding ticket.
Brasil by Bus distinguishes Easy Boarding from journeys requiring collection. ClickBus also tells passengers without a mobile boarding ticket to collect their ticket at the counter. Brasil by Bus boarding instructions, ClickBus counter-collection instructions.
Bring your valid original passport and follow your ticket's arrival instructions. Brasil by Bus recommends arriving at least one hour early and checking counter opening hours. Allow extra time where collection is required. A screenshot of the payment, reservation email or voucher does not replace a required boarding ticket.
Cancellations and where a Pix refund goes
Request cancellation through the seller's or operator's designated channel and keep the confirmation or reference number. Check the online cancellation cutoff when you book; a website may stop processing requests before the legal deadline. If that happens, contact the operator promptly. Ask for an itemised refund showing the fare and any fees. Brasil by Bus cancellation instructions.
For regular services between states covered by ANTT Resolution 6,033, request cancellation at least three hours before departure. The rules allow up to 30 days from the request for reimbursement and a deduction of up to 5%. For an unused ticket bought online or through another remote sales channel, cancellation within seven days after purchase qualifies for a full ticket refund, subject to that three-hour requirement. These rules do not automatically cover charter services or journeys entirely within one state. ANTT Resolution 6,033, Article 147.
For cancellations they process, Brasil by Bus and ClickBus publish Pix refund policies that return money to the original paying account. Their timing differs: Brasil by Bus says within two hours of processing, with possible bank delays; ClickBus says up to 24 hours after cancellation is confirmed. Check operator-specific exceptions, especially if you cancel at the counter. Brasil by Bus refunds, ClickBus refunds.
If you paid through a wallet or payment provider, check its refund process before buying. The seller returns Pix funds to the account that paid, which may belong to the provider rather than you. Its bank-return time does not tell you when the refund will reach your wallet.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a CPF to buy a bus ticket in Brazil?
Some booking routes work without one. Start with the documented options above and check both the buyer form and passenger form. A passport accepted for travel does not guarantee that every website checkout accepts your purchase.
Can I use a foreign credit card?
Brasil by Bus and BuscaOnibus document international credit-card purchases without CPF for customers outside Brazil. ClickBus's specific no-CPF route uses a passenger passport with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Approval is still required.
Is Pix always cheaper than paying by card?
Compare the actual checkout prices, then include your card's fees or your Pix provider's exchange rate and fees. Pix is cheaper only if its complete cost is lower. Use the Brazil payment-cost calculator with your own figures.
Can I board with a screenshot?
Follow the instructions for the issued ticket. Download the official mobile ticket where supported, or collect the boarding ticket if required. A screenshot of a payment receipt or reservation does not satisfy a counter-collection requirement.
Can Tucu book the bus for me?
The booking seller handles the journey, seat, confirmation and ticket. Tucu's role is paying supported local QR codes and showing the cost before you approve the payment. Use a booking route that accepts your passenger and buyer details first.
Pay locally throughout your trip with Tucu
Your bus ticket gets you to the next stop. Once you arrive, local QR payments can be part of everyday spending. Knowing their cost in dollars makes your travel budget easier to follow.
Tucu is a travel wallet built for supported local merchant QR payments in Brazil and Argentina. Scan or paste a supported code and review the local amount, exchange rate, payment fees and dollar total before you approve it.
