CPF for tourists in Brazil: do you need one, and how do you get it?
Know when you need Brazil’s tax ID, which application route fits your trip and what to arrange separately before paying with Pix.
In this article
Tourists can get a CPF in Brazil, including people who live abroad. Whether you need one depends on what you want to do and which service you use. Some providers accept a passport. Others require a CPF for a particular purchase or account. Receita Federal’s registration guidance.
That distinction can save you a wasted appointment or an abandoned booking. Before collecting documents, find out what the form is asking for: identification, optional receipt information or access to a Brazilian financial account.
A CPF, short for Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas, is Brazil’s individual taxpayer registration number. The number belongs to you permanently, but you must keep its registration details up to date. It does not give you a bank account or a way to pay by itself. Receita Federal’s CPF guide.
Know which route you need?
- Applying from abroad: start with the consular application route.
- Already in Brazil: check the in-person route and email exceptions.
- Already have a CPF: keep the same number and check the annual-update requirement.
Do you need a CPF for your trip?
Start with the bookings and services you intend to use. A short holiday can still include a purchase that requires CPF; a longer visit does not make every provider require one.
Here are several documented alternatives:
| What you want to do | What to check before applying for CPF |
|---|---|
| Register as a hotel guest | Brazil’s official guest-registration guidance allows a foreign guest’s passport number. That does not guarantee every booking website uses the same form. Ministry of Tourism. |
| Buy a prepaid SIM | TIM publishes a foreigner registration route using a passport or other eligible identification, your address during the stay and additional personal details. Ask at a TIM or partner store. TIM’s instructions. |
| Buy a bus ticket through ClickBus | Its no-CPF instructions specify a passport for the passenger and Apple Pay or Google Pay for payment. Check that you can use that combination. ClickBus help. |
| Create a Ticketmaster Brazil account | Its registration guide accepts CPF or foreign identification. Payment and event requirements still apply separately. Ticketmaster help. |
Apply when a service you need requires your own CPF and offers no suitable foreign-customer alternative. It can also be useful for repeat visits. If you plan to hold Brazilian assets, open a Brazilian bank account or carry out another activity with a legal registration requirement, check the applicable rules directly. CPF regulation, article 4.
For event bookings, our guide to buying concert tickets in Brazil covers the next hurdles: payment, ticket delivery and refunds.
Does a CPF let you use Pix?
You still need an account or payment service that supports the payment. Pix is Brazil’s instant-payment system, accessed through participating banks and payment providers. A CPF can be one type of Pix key, but owning the number does not create a Pix account. Banco Central’s payment instructions.
Brazilian accounts for nonresidents exist. Banks can decide whether to accept an applicant, and the document requirements extend beyond CPF. Banco Rendimento, for example, lists a passport, foreign tax ID, proof of residence and proof of income for foreign applicants. Banco Central on nonresident accounts, Rendimento’s requirements.
Another route is a foreign bank or wallet that supports Brazilian merchant Pix payments. Check its eligibility for your country and documents, including whether it asks for CPF. Confirm merchant QR payments specifically: an app offering transfers to Brazil may support a different service. How international Pix integrations work.
That is where Tucu comes in: one travel wallet being built for supported merchant QR payments in Brazil and Argentina. It has not launched yet; join the waiting list for early access.
If payment access is your main concern, start with our Pix guide for tourists. If a merchant requires CPF to create your order, a payment wallet does not remove that requirement.
How to get a CPF before travelling to Brazil
For a foreign applicant abroad, start with the Brazilian consulate responsible for where you live. Find it through the official consulate directory and jurisdiction links, then open its CPF instructions. This is the route specified by the official overseas CPF service.
Use this checklist to prepare, then follow your consulate’s exact requirements:
- Valid passport or other accepted photo identification. Check which identity documents your consulate accepts and bring the required originals.
- The requested application form. Complete and sign the FCPF when instructed. Generating the form does not mean your CPF has been issued.
- A supporting civil certificate, when required. A birth or marriage certificate, or an accepted foreign equivalent, may be needed to supply missing birth or parentage details. Some consulates expressly require one.
- Documents for a child or representative, if applicable. Check the age-specific parentage, guardianship or authorisation requirements before the appointment.
Use Receita’s document checklist alongside your consulate’s instructions. Zurich, for example, expressly asks foreign applicants for a passport and a civil certificate establishing their parents’ names. Check rules on copies, uploads, authentication and translation before paying to prepare documents. Zurich’s checklist.
Official example: applying through New York
If New York is your responsible consulate, its published CPF procedure works as follows:
- Generate and sign the application form. Use the official FCPF form. Foreign applicants leave the Título de Eleitor field blank.
- Submit through New York’s e-consular portal. It offers email-and-password entry without a CPF. Choose “CPF application (for foreign citizens)” and upload the signed form and required identification. Under-16s also need evidence of their parents’ names.
- Wait for document validation, then book the visit. Appointment choices come after review. Bring the originals; the consulate says it issues the CPF at the appointment. Keep the evidence it gives you.
New York also specifies authentication requirements for documents issued outside the United States. Read those before submitting. Other consulates have their own procedures, and appointment availability is separate from issuance time.
How to get a CPF while you are in Brazil
If your passport is your only identity document, plan for in-person registration. Receita Federal’s current email guidance explicitly directs these foreign applicants to in-person service, even when represented by an attorney.
The same guidance retains email service for specified groups, including people from Mercosur and associated countries, and certain diplomatic or international-organisation categories. Use the instructions that apply to your documents and situation. Receita Federal’s current channel guidance.
Before going to an office:
- Find the right location. Check Receita’s unit directory for the service you need. A PAV, or Ponto de Atendimento Virtual, provides in-person assistance and may forward documents for processing.
- Confirm how first registration is handled. Ask whether you need an appointment and how to arrange one when you do not yet have CPF.
- Prepare your documents. Bring your original accepted photo identification and any application protocol you have been issued. Check whether you also need a civil certificate to supply missing birth or parentage details, or supporting documents for a child or representative.
Use the official in-person service directory and registration checklist to plan the visit.
The booking step can be awkward: the public appointment form asks for CPF. Check the selected unit’s procedure rather than booking under a friend’s number or assuming every office accepts walk-ins.
This message asks exactly what you need to know:
Sou estrangeiro, sem CPF.
Como faço minha primeira
inscrição nesta unidade?
Preciso de agendamento?
It means: “I’m a foreigner and don’t have a CPF yet. How do I apply for first registration at this office? Do I need an appointment?”
For applicants using eligible Mercosur or associated-country identity documents, the current regulation preserves their acceptance for CPF procedures through 31 December 2026. Check the rule again if you apply after that date. December 2025 amendment.
How much does a CPF cost, and how long does it take?
Direct official registration is free. Receita Federal lists a R$7 charge through authorised partner locations, known as conveniados, such as participating banks, post offices and registry offices. A private agency’s service charge is separate. Intermediaries are not required. Official registration fees and channels.
There is no reliable single timeline for every tourist. Document preparation, review, appointment availability and issuance are separate steps. Zurich describes same-day issuance when Receita’s system is available, but that does not tell you how soon you can get an appointment. Zurich’s instructions.
Once issued, check your CPF’s registration status with Receita Federal using your number and date of birth. If a merchant rejects it, verify that your name and date of birth match your registration, then ask that merchant for help. There is no guaranteed waiting period that fixes every private checkout.
Does a foreigner’s CPF need an annual update?
Yes, for foreign holders aged 16 or over whose registered address is abroad. Article 23-A requires an update each calendar year, between 1 January and 31 December. Your CPF number stays the same. Current CPF regulation.
How to complete the annual update
- Install or update the Receita Federal app. Start from Receita’s official download page, which links to its App Store and Google Play listings.
- Have your CPF, date of birth and passport ready. For the foreign-holder update, the official instructions require your CPF and birth date, photographs of your face and passport captured through the app, and the requested registration details. Consular update instructions.
- Keep any completion confirmation. If the app reports an error, save that message. Article 23-A provides a consular fallback: request assistance from your responsible Brazilian consulate and present the app message and required identification. Follow that office’s appointment instructions.
If you cannot finish in the app, follow up with the consulate before the deadline. A registration-status check shows your current status; it should not be treated as confirmation that you completed this year’s update.
What if your CPF was issued this year?
Article 23-A does not state a general exemption for newly issued CPFs. It also does not explicitly explain whether first registration fulfils that year’s update. Ask the office issuing your CPF to confirm this while it handles your application:
Meu CPF foi emitido
este ano. Preciso fazer
a atualização anual
ainda neste ano?
“My CPF was issued this year. Do I need to complete the annual update this year too?” Ask before assuming you can wait until the following year. The regulation’s separate provision making updates optional applied specifically to 2024, not to every holder’s first year. Articles 23-A and 32-B.
Failure to update can lead to suspension. The regulation provides for a late update to correct that situation. This procedure maintains your CPF registration; it is separate from an income-tax return. Articles 12–13.
What to do when a checkout asks for CPF
First, look for a foreign-customer option, a passport field or a country selector. If none appears, ask the seller:
Sou turista e não tenho CPF.
Posso usar meu passaporte
para fazer esta compra?
“I’m a tourist and don’t have a CPF. Can I use my passport to make this purchase?”
Also check whether the question is CPF na nota, meaning CPF on the receipt. In Paraná’s receipt programme, the official guidance allows the field to remain blank when the consumer does not provide CPF, and expressly says not to substitute another person’s number. Rules can differ by transaction and location: Rio Grande do Sul, for example, describes an exception for businesses combining wholesale and retail. Nota Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul’s guidance.
An optional receipt field does not tell you whether an app will ask for CPF elsewhere. iFood’s privacy policy describes CPF collection for certain establishments’ fiscal needs, but that does not establish a universal path through every order or verification step. Our iFood guide for tourists explains the account and payment questions. iFood’s privacy policy.
Use your own identity details. If the purchase requires CPF and you have none, ask for a supported alternative or choose another seller. A generated or borrowed number can leave the purchase attached to details that are not yours.

Do children need to wait until they are 18 to get a CPF?
No. Minors can register. The required identity, parentage and representative documents depend on age and the application route, so use the official checklist for the child’s situation. Receita Federal’s registration requirements.
What if I already have a CPF but have forgotten the number?
Use Receita Federal’s official recovery or support channels. A person has one CPF number; do not request a second registration because you have lost the first. Receita Federal’s CPF questions and answers.
Can I get a CPF entirely online?
